Matcha Nude Turns a Crisis Into a Comeback: How a Small, Woman-Owned Business Battled a 3-Month Product Shortage and Won
November 2025 — For a small woman-owned business like Matcha Nude, having your bestselling product out of stock for three months is more than a hiccup, it’s a full-on identity crisis. But instead of closing shop or hitting pause, the team behind the cult-favorite clean matcha brand did what women do best: they pivoted, innovated, and proved their resilience.
Back in July, Matcha Nude hit their biggest sales month ever. The matcha was flowing, the vibes were high, and the community was strong. Then came an unexpected reality check: a global matcha shortage.
“We didn’t see a shortage of this caliber coming and neither did our farmers,” says Samantha Coffin, founder of Matcha Nude. “The worldwide demand for matcha has exploded. While we love seeing more people fall in love with this magical green powder, it’s created serious supply chain pressure.”
Compounding the challenge? Weather shifts in Japan delayed the harvest by a full month, and rising costs from tariffs made things even more unpredictable. What was expected to be a two-week delay turned into a three-month rollercoaster.
“This isn’t a long-term problem. It’s a short-term obstacle,” says Samantha. “And we faced it head-on.”
They got scrappy. They got creative. They got brewing.
Matcha Nude launched First Whisk, a new matcha offering that stepped in to keep customers energized and sipping. Then came the introduction of Hojicha, a Japanese roasted green tea made from the same plant as matcha but roasted to perfection for a naturally smooth, toasty flavor with significantly less caffeine.
Amid this whirlwind, Matcha Nude was also selected as part of the inaugural cohort of Optimist Ventures, a powerful new model of venture philanthropy supporting scalable, community-rooted, and sustainable companies across Western North Carolina.
The 15-week accelerator includes a $50,000 funding package, half grant, half investment, plus mentorship, education, and a network of support through Venture Asheville, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, and partners like Dogwood Health Trust and Truist Foundation.
“It couldn’t have come at a better time,” says Samantha. “It affirmed that even in the hardest moments, our vision still matters and that others believe in it too.”
Matcha Nude stayed true to its values: no layoffs, full transparency, and continued care for their customers and community. While sales dipped in August and September, every new order, every returning customer, and every message of support was a reminder that Matcha Nude is more than just a beverage brand, it’s a movement.
Now with First Whisk and Hojicha in the mix, their signature matcha back on the menu, and a fiercely loyal community behind them, Matcha Nude is ready for what’s next.
