Looking for the ultimate spooky snack that’s equal parts cute, crunchy, and unexpectedly green? Meet Monster Matcha Puppy Chow, a Halloween-ready twist on the nostalgic treat we all grew up loving (aka Muddy Buddies). This version, created by our friend Lee of The Rogue Brussel Sprout, gets a festive upgrade with a powdered sugar-matcha coating, spooky sprinkles, and just the right amount of crunch. Whether you're making it for a Halloween movie night, classroom treat, or a not-so-scary grown-up gathering, this monster mix is here to haunt your snack table in the best way.
Ingredients
- 4 cups Chex cereal (gluten-free if desired)
- 1 cup white chocolate chips or disks (vegan if needed)
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 3 tbsp Halloween sprinkles, divided
-
1 tbsp Matcha Nude
- ¼ cup natural cashew butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp salt
Directions
Combine the white chocolate, cashew butter, vanilla, and salt in a double boiler (a small heatproof bowl set over a pot with about 1 inch of simmering water).
Simmer the water in the double boiler and stir the chocolate mixture until smooth, creamy, and fully combined.
Place the Chex cereal in a large bowl and pour the melted chocolate mixture over the top. Gently stir until all of the cereal pieces are evenly coated.
Transfer the cereal mixture to a large sheet tray and evenly scatter 2 tbsp of Halloween sprinkles across the top. Let the cereal mixture sit for about 10 minutes until partially but not completely hardened (this will help the sprinkles to stick).
Transfer the cereal to a large storage container.
In a small bowl, stir together the confectioners’ sugar and matcha powder. Sift this mixture into the storage container on top of the cereal.
Cover with a lid and shake until evenly coated. If needed, break up any large cereal clumps by hand.
Let the completed cereal mixture set in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
Before serving, transfer the Monster Matcha Puppy Chow to a bowl and garnish with the remaining 1 tbsp of sprinkles. Discard any extra confectioner’s sugar that did not stick to the cereal.
Store any leftover Monster Matcha Puppy Chow in a sealed container at room temperature for several days.
Recipe Note
Why We Love It:
It’s fun, easy, and ridiculously snackable—but still made with cleaner ingredients and our favorite glow-green magic: Matcha Nude. Plus, it's totally customizable (make it vegan, gluten-free, or nut-free!) and wildly addictive. One handful turns into four. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. 💚👻
🌀 Microwave Option:
White chocolate can be fussy—double boiler is best. But if needed, microwave chocolate + cashew butter mix in 15–30 sec bursts, stirring between. Add 1 tsp coconut oil if it needs smoothing out.
💚 Recipe Notes:
This version uses extra chocolate and no butter to help sprinkles stick and give you that epic crunch. Salt and vanilla add balance to all that sweetness. And matcha? It brings the monster magic.
🌱 Dietary Swaps:
- Vegan: Use vegan white chocolate
- Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free Chex
- Nut-Free: Sub sunflower butter (note: color will be less vibrant)
